National Museum of Afghanistan

Adam Richards Architects were shortlisted in this international competition for the new National Museum of Afghanistan. Working alongside Buro Happold, we developed a detailed design that draws heavily on the history of architecture and landscape in Afghanistan in its ideas, forms, materials and craftsmanship. At the centre of our design for the new national museum is a crystalline glass box surrounded by delicate timber latticework screens, cradling a grove of Afghan pines. The galleries that pin-wheel around it and the treasures they contain are like a great star-shaped fortification: a caravanserai for culture.
