Arbour

Sussex, UK. 2011

This arbour at Petworth House in Sussex provides a shaded place to sit and to enable the family to eat outside in summer. Sir John Soane produced unrealized designs for alterations to Petworth. Our design is based on the ceiling of John Soane’s breakfast parlour at No.12 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, which takes the form of a ‘starfish’ vault, painted by John Crace to resemble an arbour with climbing plants. The eight columns supporting the canopy are slender, paired metal colonnettes based on those in the loggia of Soane’s No.13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, which in turn were inspired by Roman architectural decoration of the type revealed in a painted room in the gardens of the Villa Negroni in Rome that Soane saw being excavated in 1779.
