This house was designed to provide a simple but sophisticated rural retreat for an urban couple. Planning permission was gained in 2013. It sits on a ridge in rolling countryside, and from the lane appears to be a series of cottages stepping down the slope. Closer inspection reveals the design to be an abstract contemporary design of great power that creates a series of compelling spaces. On entering the house one is faced by light cascading down a wide stair immediately ahead. A left turn leads to the kitchen and orangery dining area; a right turn leads along a mysterious passage towards the light of a sitting room. This reveals itself to be a grand 4m high space on a great platform looking out from the hillside out into the landscape. It would have been one of the great rooms of England.
