ARA were asked by the Hyde Park Picture House to develop designs for its listed art-house cinema building. We came up with a design approach that was successful in winning a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for the project: our proposals included an exhibition of archive material including film programmes dating back to the cinema's opening night, restored original features and ensures its future as a working historic cinema for another century to come. A second screen is designed for the basement, with a new-build café extension linking this to the original foyer, giving the cinema a new set of spaces for events and outreach. The new extension is designed as a contemporary version of the great era of ‘picture palaces’, with a café window like a cinema screen.
