Yacht Club

Cumbria, UK. 2011

Our entry to this open competition for a yacht club in the English Lake District proposes a space for outside social events, inspired by the Piazzeta San Marco in Venice. This space is framed by a number of elements: the clubhouse has a large club room & bar on the first floor, dramatically positioned to look both out at the lake and over the club’s site, reached by a sweeping helical stair. A ‘floodable’ ground floor contains changing & meeting rooms. The two floors are also linked by a timber external ramp, which doubles as a viewing platform for events and racking for dinghies. A race office pavilion at the water’s edge is held within a timber trapezoidal frame, inspired by large buoys and other nautical forms. The building would be constructed using insulation-grade structural concrete, with an outer face of local stone. The proposed roof would be constructed as a unique timber frame, based on the structure of wooden boats’ hulls.
